- James, a 16-year-old boy in high school, lives across the street from his friend Bob. Bob, also 16 and in high school, has been plagued with injuries as he has been trying to beat the state’s 400-meter record. Over the past year, James had already broken Maycomb High School’s 400-meter record three times in the little town of Maycomb, Iowa. However, plagued with a chronic stress fracture in his right leg, James is unsure how much longer he can take the pain as he chases his dream.

- As James ices his leg at home, he remembers seeing some medicines in his dad’s pharmaceutical bag that he keeps at the back door when he gets home from his day at the Maycomb Pharmacy. James thought to himself that he was just going to take a peek; however, little did he know that this was going to be the start of a very long and unpleasant journey. As he looked into his dad’s bag, he noticed 3 bottles full of something called Oxycodone. Upon reading the small print on the bottle, James found that the medicine was used for treating pain. Not knowing exactly what he was getting into, James grabbed one of the bottles and popped two pills into his mouth. He swallowed hard, and the medicine flowed down his throat into his stomach. Thirty minutes later, James noticed that the pain had subsided in his leg. He grinned and thought to himself, That state title is going to be mine.

- A week into taking the drugs, James noticed that the frequency of pain relief from his leg was dwindling. As he took the medicine more often, he discovered that his supply was nearly finished. While he didn’t think stealing another bottle from his dad would get noticed, he quickly realized that he was going to have to find a different way of supplying his needs over the long haul. As he sat in bed contemplating his next move, he made the decision to steal two bottles from his dad, one for his personal use and one that he would market to the other track athletes.
