- This is Damocles Dock and Lake Lachrymose. This is where most of the story takes place. Here are the protagonists: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire with their Aunt Josephine. Captain Sham, or Count Olaf, is the antagonist. And the banker, Mr. Poe.
- Rising Event #3
- Mr. Poe dropped the Baudelaires off at Damocles Dock near Lake Lachrymose. He gives them peppermints and bids them farewell. He tells them to get a taxi to get to their Aunt Josephine's cliff house.
- Rising Event #4
- Count Olaf
- As the Baudelaire children ride in the taxi, the driver tells them about Hurricane Herman, which is supposed to be very strong.
- The Baudelaires meet their Aunt Josephine, who is supposed to be fierce and formidable, but now she is afraid of almost everything in her house and loves grammar. The children tell her about the hurricane, and she agrees to go shopping for supplies.
- While looking for cucumbers, Violet runs into someone she recognizes: Count Olaf. He has the same shiny eye (the other is covered by a fake eye-patch) and one eyebrow. But the tattoo on his left ankle is covered by a fake peg-leg. Aunt Josephine is taken in by the disguise, but the children knows it's him.
