- The Judge has alluded to the Declaration of Independence, and insisted that negroes are not included in that Declaration; and that it is a slander upon the framers of that instrument, to suppose that negroes were meant therein; and he asks you: Is it possible to believe that Mr. Jefferson, who penned the immortal paper, could have supposed himself applying the language of that instrument to the negro race, and yet held a portion of that race in slavery?

- LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: I have been somewhat, in my own mind, complimented by a large portion of Judge Douglas's speech-I mean that portion which he devotes to the controversy between himself and the present Administration. This is the seventh time Judge Douglas and myself have met in these joint discussions,

- With Lincoln starting it of with a solid speech and Douglas responding with a reply that was able to answer all the question but while also accusing and naming Lincoln a radical psycho in his speeches.

- The debate is coming on to an end and by the looks of it this will be the final speech out of the two ad the last reply, which the results will be decided based on votes.

- With the final results going in favor of Douglas with 53 percent of voters going and voting for Douglas and 47 percent voting for Lincoln to win, it was a tight match, though. With this win, their future of Douglas seemed clear, but through the years, things just got worse and worse for him. First, Douglas loses his name as the democratic leader of the party and eventually loses an election to become president of the United States.

- A few years later, in 1863-1864, the presidential elections happened. It was Lincoln vs. Douglas again. Eventually, Lincoln won by a considerable margin against Douglas; the results are 57 percent voted for Lincoln, and only 43 percent voted for Douglas.
- Lincoln and Douglas stare each other down and have a handshake to settle the first debate.
