Ukrainian Propaganda and Biases

Storyboard-Text

  • Both sides have been using major news biases to obscure the truth that the war really has been.
  • Recent news on the Ruso-Ukraine war is always at the top of everybody's news feeds and has been a hot topic for past half a year. Each side is using the war as a propaganda tool in media and to cover what is really happening to convince there own citizens, which has been prevalent since propaganda campaigns from the world wars.
  • The west has seen this war for mostly what it is but that doesn't mean it has no biases or propaganda to draw up public support for Ukraine. Some events can be taken out of context to try and all Russian's in a bad light.
  • Many news stories use narative biases to put absoloute support on the Ukrainian side to avoid any doubts that they are the good guys in this conflict. Making the Russians look terrible and like war criminals when they aren't completley in the wrong
  • Russian bombings on schools have been a huge narative bias used by sources like CNN or PBS to show that they are commmiting war crimes. PBS lists the dates of some of the attacks took place: a school on September 1, 2022 in Sloviansk, a school on July 4, 2022 in Kharkiv, and many many more ( Dearen et al.).
  • This is very different when looking at it from the Russian perspective. When finding places to fight and create resistance for the Russians, Ukrainian forces took places that forced civilians to be in danger. An article from Amnesty.org states that, Ukrainian forces have put civilians in harm’s way by establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas, including in schools and hospitals (Ukraine: UFTEC).
  • All of what Putin has said for reasoning for invasion has either been lies, or excuses for justification for war. There was no real reason for the war and Russian mass media will continue to produce articles that say Russia was in the right no matter what. Even with that many Russian protests have broken out over the length of the war and many now flee the country as Russia starts to partially mobolize.
  • Putin's main reasoning for the invasion of Ukraine have shifted multiple times to try and keep Russian public opinion in the positive. Going from NATO expanding as cause for the war, to claiming with no proof that Ukraine is commiting genocide against Russians with a Nazi like government. (Valmis)
  • With many U.S. Articles being published about some of the atrocities that are happening in Ukraine, many of them use visual biases to get more people emotionally attached to the stories.
