- Mattie is trying to stop the bickering between Lou and Beth as she spilled the milk and Lou starts yelling at her. Barney, the dog starts licking up the milk even though he's blind.

- Lou started talking like a boy even though Mattie had told her to stop and their Ma wouldn't like it but she said Mom is gone, she could do whatever and Abby told her to be quiet which startled the girls when she yelled.

- Tommy and Jenny had stopped by for food because they live in a small house with 5 siblings and they couldn't afford food so Mattie would feed them. Their property was also behind on taxes and their mother was a little weird.
- Pa, I want to work at the Glenmore over the summer to make money.
- No as it isn't safe and you will be missing school tomorrow to help me plow the field
- Once Tommy and Jenny enter, she was wearing clothes too big for her and Mattie realized that she hasn't fed pa and the pot was looking empty but Lou offered them her plate as she was tired of the meal. Jenny said thank you and they ate.
- Mattie told Beth to get her dictionary from the desk and Lou could pick the word but Lou didn't want to so she told Beth to just pick one. She said fractious and Mattie told Tommy to read the definition which was apt to break out into a passion. They had done the word of the day for Mattie. The kids then left for school and Lou skipped to go fishing with Lawton's fishing pole.
- Mattie has asked her father for her to work at the Glenmore Hotel over the summer but he strictly said no and he told her that she has to stay home tomorrow from school to help with the farm. She was upset with her father's decision.
