Chapter 1: Owen Danforth returns home to Texas after he is wounded in the arm by a Yankee saber.
Chapter 2: Two brothers, Vance and Tyson Hubbard, come to ask Owen's father, Andrew Danforth, to deliver a letter to their mother and sister being held hostage in town by Phineas Shattuck.
Chapter 3: Instead, Owen delivers the letter, and he sneaks the Hubbard women out of town, towards the thicket.
Chapter 4: Phineas Shattuck shoots Owen's Uncle Zach and burns his cabin.
Chapter 5: Shattuck tries to arrest Owen and Andrew, planning to shoot them on the way to town. But Claude Chancellor, the sherriff, shows up and rides into town with them so they can't be shot. When they reach the jail, men from the thicket jump out and put Shattuck, the heel flies, and Chancellor in jail and take off with Owen and Andrew.
Chapter 6: Vance Hubbard dies after being shot.
