Storyboard-Text

  • Hi! I'm Mary. I'm a single mother to my 8 year old daughter. Together we live in public-assisted housing and receive assistance from federal programs to obtain food and other resources.
  • Because we don't have any reliable transportation we utilize the public transportation system when we can. But sometimes I have difficulty to my medical appointment regularly.
  • My kidney function has been decreasing and so I've been needing to come to the hospital for dialysis in addition to coming to the hospital twice a month for whole body blood transfusion because of my sickle cell disease.
  • Frequent hospital visits and lack of transportation has been making it difficult to gain and keep employment. We often don't have enough money for food, but luckily we benefit from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. With SNAP I can shop the local farmers market for fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Proposed budget cuts in housing, food, and employment will not only affect my life but it will affect my health and well-being.
  • The proposal for SNAP would decrease the access to fresh fruits and vegetables and replace those items with a box of non-perishable foods such as shelf-stable milk, ready-to-eat cereal, pasta, peanut butter, beans, and canned foods.
  • Low-income housing and energy assistance program cuts will make it difficult for me to afford the home we live in and the utilities needed daily.
  • Work, transportation, housing, and food insecurities significantly impact my health mentally and physically. Because I won't be able to afford health care costs I will wait until my health is in a crisis before I seek emergency services.
  • Luckily we still have access to this service and hopefully we can all come together and fight to make sure these programs stay in place so that we stop the progression of health disparities.
  • This comic strip is a representation of the news article Make America healthy again: rethinking the federal budget to improve our health by James D. Park. While it seems like this is an individual issue, it’s really a national issue because this affects everyone just like“Mary”.
