World war 2 was fought in between 6 countries US, great Britain, and the soviet union on one side and Germany, Italy, and japan on the other in 1939-1945. The US had planned to stay neutral until Japan bombed pearl harbor.
War in Vietnam
This was an operation conducted by the CIA in 1961 to overturn communist Castro in Cuba. The operation failed and all of the exiles sent to Cuba were capture or killed

The reason for the US involvement was because the US wanted to contain communism in Asia and stop an aggressor all together.
