The battle of Somme place in northern France close to the river of Somme It started, 01/07/1917 and ended, 28/11/1916.The commander was General Sir Douglas Haig From Edinburgh, Scotland;
The offensive was planned to take some of the pressure off at Verdun, France. Here the french were under heavy attack and pressure. The french lost many men
The negative results from this battle was: Many soldiers died from both sides, Many young soldiers killed, Haig sent many new men to the battlefield fore 4 months and the Hearts football team even lost 12 of their players from this battle.
Many young soldiers with not much experience fought in the Battle of Somme. Some were fighting in Pals battalions and some had just joined the army and this was their first battle
This plan had some flaws. The constant carvel attack made no man's land very sludgy and difficult to move

During the battle of Somme the Germans decided to hide in underground bunkers. They would be able to mount machine guns from dug-outs and they knew when an infantry attack would come.
