  • Hi E., I also have Parkinson’s and I wish that I was able to walk.
  • Thank you so much. You are so sweet.
  • Hi M., You can do so many other things though! When I first saw you i thought you had an amazing singing voice
  • I think that’s a good idea.
  • We can do this together, let’s try and be more positive together in the future.
  • That is a really insightful way to look at things E., it’s important that you recognize your own need to change before you can help someone else!
  • It seems like M. is also having a tough time with her confidence and she looks up to you. Maybe you can be a role model for her to show her that she can do it.
  • I think that I am not in the best place myself right now, but when I am able to be more positive about myself, I could try and help her too.
  • Lets go M.! You can do it!
  • There is nothing to be sorry for! Tomorrow, we can come up with a plan to identify and reach your goals. It is important that you work to change your mindset for yourself, and not just to get out of the facility.
  • I’m sorry I am so negative and complain all the time. I shouldn't say those things if I want any chance of getting out of here.
  • This client matches the contemplation stage of the TTM model. She is recently recognizing that her lack of confidence in herself and negative thoughts are problematic and impacting her ability to go through life as she would like. While she understands the benefits of changing, the client is still hesitant to believe in herself and looks at change as being in the near future. People in this stage also tend to get stuck on their negative behaviors. This is emphasized by her apologizing for complaining and being negative. The scenes in this comic strip represent a real encounter during a group with this client. After realizing that she has false negative beliefs, this client began apologizing for being negative. Moving forward, I will assist the client to weigh the pros and cons of the target behavior and change to improving her thoughts about herself and acting on them. It will also be important to change her focus from, “In order to get out of here I have to do this”, to “I want to change my thoughts in order to make my life better”. I will support the client’s self-efficacy and confidence and allow her to maintain control over her treatment. It is especially important to provide structure and continue to educate and encourage on the benefits of thinking more positively. Lastly, it is important to come up with goals with the client for the future and take small steps towards that goal. I believe that E. is close to reaching the preparation stage and can do this throughout occupational therapy interventions.
