Storyboard-Text

  • The Japanese attack using an air striker and bomb the coast of Darwin. They attacked Darwin because they wanted to destroy Australia's northern defenses, so that it could invade Timor. The first bomb was dropped at 10am on the 19th of February, 1942.
  • 252 lives were lost due to the Darwin Bombing and a further 300 to 400 people were wounded. The Australian army fought to try and hold off the Japanese but they were too powerful because they were in the air.
  • The Japanese military continued to attack and bomb Darwin. In total they ended up bombing Darwin 64 times with the last air raids occurring in November 1943. The US Naval victory at the midway battle prevented Japan from bombing Australia anymore because they destroyed their main aircraft carriers.
  • The Japanese landed in Papa in July of 1942. The purpose was to take over Port Moresby via a track over the Owen Stanley Range, the track starts and ends in those two places. Japan also wanted to isolate Australia from USA. Australia moved in to protect Port Moresby so that they themselves couldn't get attacked.
  • 56 000 Australian troops were deployed to fight in the Battle of Kokoda. There were approximately 1 600 Australian soldiers wounded and 625 died, however around 10 000 Japanese soldiers that passed away on the Kokoda track.
  • After four long fought months the Japanese surrendered and the battle of Kokoda was won by the Australians with the help of some Papa New Guinea locals. They prevented Japan from reaching their target of taking over Port Moresby. This was a significant event that Australia were involved in and this battle saved their country.
