- The problem begins with the language barrier in Girifalco. I can understand parts of the dialect, but I can’t speak it fluently, and it makes me feel disconnected from my family. My goal is to learn enough Calabrese and Italian by the next time I visit so I can have real conversations and build closer relationships.

- When I speak standard Italian, my cousins correct me using the Calabrese dialect, and the difference between what I say and what I hear makes the conversation uneven. Amy Tan’s ideas help me understand this feeling because she explains how language can shape belonging and confidence. Her experience makes me see why this matters so much in my own family conversations.

- In Girifalco, the community around me and the dialect of the people are ways that help me learn. Being around relatives who speak Calabrese forces me to listen, learn phrases, and practice them during conversations. I can relate to Angelou’s ideas on dealing with problems instead of ignoring them.

- If I want to improve, then practice, learning vocabulary, and talking to my family are what I need. Being able to connect to Tan, Angelou, and Moore give me a deeper understanding that talking, taking action, and wanting to know more are just what it takes during tough situations.

- What were some of the ways you learned the Calabrese dialect?
- This stage of my plan is about setting real milestones so I can track my progress. I’ve created small goals I can reach one at a time, like learning everyday phrases, practicing a few times a week, and checking in with my American cousin who is fluent in the dialect.

- Learning this dialect is more than just communication. It is about feeling like I belong and understanding who I am, particularly when planning for the future when communication will be very important. If I face problems, I can change my plans, just like Moore adjusts his ideas to tackle plastic waste. My goal is to inspire people to see language as an important thing to develop.
