  • Geography
  • The South's fertile soil is tremendous for growing my crops!
  • One-hundred percent, and the many rivers make transporting my goods so much easier and cheaper.
  • The south was known for its fertile soil, this is why many indigenous people were removed from their homes, it was on fertile land. The South also has many rivers which allowed easy transportation for goods, and it was cheap.
  • Economy
  • You can thank the cotton gin, with it's fast and easy way of removing seeds from cotton slave owners are making more and more cotton
  • Why are there so many new slaves?
  • The cotton gin let cotton farmers reduce the cost to manufacture cotton, they began making more and more and needed more slaves to gather the cotton. It caused the cotton farmers to get rich and the slavery to skyrocketed. 
  • Resulting in more slaves needed to gather/pick the cotton
  • Political
  • I wish I were free and out of this torture. 
  • I want to be free too, but don't get your hopes up. None of his local slaves are supporting him, John  won't succeed. 
  • Maybe you will, I heard that John Brown has devised a plan to free all of the enslaved people in the South. Him and his army!
  • In 1859, John Brown came up with a plan to free the slaves  but didn't receive assistance from the local slave population (New England), he was then captured and sentenced to death.
  • Cultural Development
  • And go to church!
  • I wish we were allowed to dance and play drums after worship.
  • At least we are allowed to sing songs with one another
  • Slaves were allowed to meet for Christian services with whites but were only allowed to sing after worship, not dance or play drums, as usual in Africa
  • Social
  • Isn't it time we do the ethical thing and free the slaves
  • These slaves have attained a condition so civilized and improved than what they will ever experience, morally, intellectually, and physically improved
  • John C. Calhoun stating his beliefs on why he thinks slavery is a good thing for the country--including slaves themselves.

  • How many more years do you think slavery will last, do you think either of us will see freedom?
  • I have no idea, but we are the main topic of the election of 1852, maybe progress towards our freedom will be made.
  • Two slaves talking about their freedom and how slavery became a big part of politics, whether it was okay or not (South vs. North)
