Storyboard-Text

  • When Desiree brings Jude back to Mallard, comments and rumors are spread throughout the town about Jude's appearance, "Nothing the matter." the Stetson man said slowly. "She just as black as can be" (Bennett 53). Jude throughout the book is constantly mentioned as dark or black. We can tell that Jude is the darkest person to ever be in Mallard.
  • Once Jude figures out Reese's condition, she immediately jumps to helping her by learning more about her surgery, "She barely understood how hormones worked, so on a whim, she enrolled in an anatomy class that she enjoyed far more than she expected" (Bennett 130). Jude's actions show that she cares for the ones that she loves. Reese was someone she had just recently met but it did not stop her from helping her out.
  • Jude wanted to help Reese when she found out that he wanted to have top surgery but did not know how he would react. "He would never agree to let her pay for an expensive surgery. And what if he misunderstood? What if he thought she wanted him to have the surgery because she wanted him to change" (Bennett 130). Jude wants to take Reese feelings into consideration before she makes this life changing decision. Jude thinks a lot about Reese which shows she really cares about him more than readers think .
  • How does the character look
  • What actions do they take?
  • Jude and Kennedy often have their differences because they both come from two different lifestyles and backgrounds. Kennedy was more self centered but Jude needed answers from her, "And she carried herself like every aggrieved actress, a little prideful, a little wounded" (Bennett 235). Although Jude doesn't dislike Kennedy, she doesn't agree with everything she does. She knows Kennedy is prideful but she wants to be informed if Kennedy is really Stella's daughter.
  • What does the character think about
  • Jude continues to work with bodies and enjoys what she does years into the future, "Once she got past the smell, Jude liked working with cadavers. She didn't have to joke about them to mask her discomfort; she never felt sick at the sight of a dead body" (Bennett 327). Jude started working with bodies to help Reese and ended up really enjoying what she does. She works well with dead bodies which is not something everyone can do.
  • Where have they been/ Where are they going
  • Jude goes to New York to support Reese throughout his surgery. Kennedy, Jude's cousin, happens to be in New York for her opera shows. Kennedy thinks Jude is following her around, "but it turned out that she hadn't resurfaced in New York because of Kennedy at all. Her boyfriend was sick-- dying, even-- and here Kennedy was, assuming Jude was thinking about her" (Bennett 281). Jude lived in Mallared growing up and went over to UCLA. When she went down for school that is where she met Kennedy. So now that Jude is in New York it was immediately assumed that she wanted to bother Kennedy when all she wanted was to help Reese.
