Starr testifies for Khalil. In spite of the fear she has for the outcome of the trial and how it will affect her family, she tells the truth for Khalil. Her mom says, "Brave doesn't mean you're not scared, Starr . . . It means you go on even though you're scared. And you're doing that." (Thomas 335). Starr is brave and speaks the truth on the stand in front of the grand jury, showing that she is brave and cared for Khalil deeply.

Haley confronts Starr for lying about not knowing Khalil. They get into a disagreement about racist things Haley has said and done. Haley says, "He was a drug dealer and a gangbanger . . . Somebody was going to kill him eventually," (Thomas 344). The fight becomes physical with Seven and Remy joining. The fight results in suspensions. This shows how dynamically the characters have changed, and how different Starr's relationship with Haley will be moving forward.

The Jury does not hold One-Fifteen accountable and Starr goes to protest with Seven, Chris, and DeVante. She gets a blow horn and speaks about what happened that night. Starr says, "But this isn't about how Khalil died. It's about the fact that he lived. His life mattered. Khalil lived!" (Thomas 410). Starr uses her voice to fight for Khalil in public for the first time. She is determined to fight for him to receive the justice he deserves.
