- Why doesn't my paper plane ever fly far? What can I do?
- Who's there?! I'm warning you, I know Karate!
- Funny you should ask...
- I'm here to answer your science question.
- What science question?
- What can you do to make your paper plane fly further?
- It's me, Will Newed, The Science Dude! I was in the neighbourhood.
- Oh, okay then. Get on with it...
- Alright! To start, I like your "Basic Dart" plane design.
- Because of it's streamline design, it is easier for the plane to move through the air to travel further distances, as there is less drag.
- So less drag, means further distance?
- No! That sounds hard to make.
- Oh no, not at all. I know these girls, Calais, Jess and Yashveen, who made theirs out of cardboard and rubber bands!
- Yes, exactly! Now, have you ever considered a paper plane launcher?
- But why would I bother?
- Paper planes also need speed to fly, however, when you throw a paper plane, there isn't a lot of space to make any before it is thrown.
- Real planes need speed to create lift to carry the weight of it, that's why they have long runways.
- And when they released the rubber band, that stored energy turned into motion making energy.
- With launchers, you don't need space to create speed.
- The rubber bands that the girls used, when stretched, had energy that stored in it.
- Oh, so what happens when you use a slingshot?
- If you want some fun ideas, those girls used more than one rubber band, and used different angles, and their plane went even further!
- Yes, perfect! So when you use a rubber band to make more speed, it will push your plane further.
- Wow, that sounds really fun! Those girls must be really smart.
