  • Subjectivity is the ongoing, recursive process of pursuing self-understanding, capturing those lived experiences, and how they shape our view of the world. It involves examining “you” as part of the research’s “messiness” (Ellis, 2004),discovering our “subjective I's” (Peshkin), in preparation for what we bring to the research process.
  • At home, for example, we can be our natural selves, relaxed and authentic. However, we are different “selves” in the outside world. Subjectivity, when thoughtfullyrecognized, can be a valuable resource for understanding the researcher’srole or lens in co-creating qualitative research involving interaction with others.

  • Reflexivity is the active process, often recorded (e.g., in a field journal), ofunderstanding the researcher's "self" as part of the research setting, context, and social phenomena being studied.
  • Reflection is a type of personal introspection; by contrast, reflexivity involves the self within the context of the research to understand its potential influence on the research. The researcher’s journal is anessential resource for contemplation on one’s subjectivities and how those might affect a given interpretation of an observation or event.
