Alternative energy sources

Storyboard-Text

  • Hello, I'm Chris McKernan and I would like to talk about alternative energy solutions and how they effect our environment in both a positive and negative way, and the who, what, when, where, why, and how.
  • It is no secret that many of the ways we get our energy is also extremely damaging to our creatures and environment, a major source of energy is fossil fuels and non-renewable resources. These forms of energy are dangerous and harmful to the environment, the majority of the cars we use burn fossil fuels which releases carbon dioxide which is then released into the air and gets trapped in our atmosphere which then cause global warming, and if you don't know what that causes, then look at one example, a polar bear on a very tiny ice block.
  • The first alternative energy source I want to talk about is Bio energy. Bio energy is created through burning biomass, this form of energy is currently the most utilized source of energy in the US today, it is used in power generation, heat for industry and buildings, and for transportation in our cars. This form of energy was discovered and created by a Danish inventor by the name of Jans Dall Bentzen, and is most popular in Ethiopia where this form of energy is used as 92.2% of their energy supply. You might wonder how this energy is created, when plants go through the process of photosynthesis they absorb energy from the sun, so when these plants are burned, we can convert that energy and utilize it for ourselves. But no source of energy is completely clean, and this one isn't pollution free.
  • The pollution part of Bio energy is that when you burn it, it releases greenhouse gasses that is then captured in the atmosphere, even though it doesn't release the same amount of gas as burning fossil fuels but it still is enough, really the only difference is that Bio energy is renewable.
  • A more clean form of energy is Geothermal energy. The first geothermal energy plant was made by Prince Piero Ginori Conti, and this form of energy is mainly used in western states and Hawaii. Geothermal energy is unlimited and renewable, this energy source will never run out because it comes from heat from the Earth's core, this energy comes from steam that is then converted into energy. The only problem with this energy is that this energy generates waste, requires proper management, is location-specific, high initial cost, and can cause earthquakes in extreme conditions.
