The Monsters are due on Maple Street Theme: mankind is its own worst enemy
Gleiten: 3
One of the main themes in The monsters are due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is Mankind is its own worst enemy. Firstly, on page 673 when Les Goodman's car turns on suddenly and everyone rushes over to his house to find a scapegoat. This proves the theme because when something random happens everyone turns on Les Goodman so that they aren't the ones to be blamed. Next, on page 680 and 681 Charlie shoots Pete van horn and everyone turns on him and accuses him of being the monster so to get the blame off of him he says its the boy and points at Tommy. This further proves the theme because when Charlie was in a state of panic he decided to blame someone even if they were innocent so that he was out of trouble. Finally, At the end of act 2 on page 683 and 684 we see a clip of the aliens looking over the town, talking about how all maple streets have the same outcome with a few exceptions. This further proves the theme of mankind being its own worst enemy because it shows how all maple streets or most people end up like the people we see on this maple street. In conclusion a fitting theme for the passage is mankind is its own worst enemy.
