  • Giusppe Mazzini was a nationalist who created Young Italy in 1831. This organization was directed towards the unification of Italy.

  • Italy, A new Kingdom
  • The ideas of Mazzini spread and caused Italian states to revolt in 1848. Sicily, Lombardy, and Venetia all rebelled against their Austrian overlords. Charles Albert, king of Piedmont lead a war for liberation from Austrian domination but was unsuccessful. Austria also regained control of Lombardy and Venetia by 1849.
  • In southern Italy, Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian patriot, lead an army called the Red Shirts to Sicily on May 11, 1860. He was successful here. Then, in August he marched on Naples and Two Sicilies which fell in September.
  • On March 17, 1861, Italy was proclaimed a new kingdom under a centralized government, subordinated to the control of Piedmont and King Victor Emmanuel II.
