The King really wasn't the worst leader, just really ineffective for Frances Financial situation. And people were tired of it. This riot later led to the The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen being written. Marking the decision to start fresh.
On July 14, 1789, angry citizens stormed the Bastille prison, showing that the people were ready to challenge the king’s authority. Since normal citizens were attacking a prison, this basically shows the start of the revolution.

As the revolution became more extreme, leaders like Maximilien Robespierre led the Reign of Terror and even executed King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.

After the death of the King, it led to France becoming a republic. The chaos of the revolution eventually led to Napoleon Bonaparte taking power and ending the revolutionary period. He seized power specifically in the Coup of 18 Brumaire.
