The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy
In the Monsters Are Due in Maple Street by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is mankind is its own worst enemy. To begin with, Les Goodman's car starts up by itself. When this happened the people of Maple Street's suspicion started to rise which caused people to start pointing fingers. On page number 76 of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, Serling writes, “'And he never did come out to look at that thing that flew overhead. He wasn't even interested.’ … ‘Why? Why didn’t he come out with the rest of us to look?’” (Serling). This demonstrates how easy it is for the people of Maple Street to blame someone for something that wasn't their fault. The residents of Maple Street show just how easy it is to make enemies again after a woman tries to keep the blame on Les Goodman. On page number 77 she told the residents of Maple Street the suspicious things that Goodman does at night. “‘Well if that's the case, Les Goodman, explain why’—(She stops suddenly, clamping her mouth shut.) (softly). ‘Explain what?’... ‘Well…sometimes I go to bed late at night. A couple of times…a couple of times I’d come out on the porch and see Mr.Goodman here in the wee hours of the morning standing out front of his house…looking up at the sky.’... As if he were waiting for something.’ … ‘As if he were looking for something.’” (Sterling) This is another example of the residents of Maple Street proving that mankind is its own worst enemy. Finally, the residents of Maple Street yet again on page 81 when Don and Charlie accuse Steve of doing something suspicious at night in his basement. “There's no need gettin’ upset, Steve. It's just that …well … Myra’s talked about how there's been plenty of nights you spend hours down in your basement wokin’ on some kind of radio or something. Well, none of us have ever seen that radio—’... ‘Go ahead, Steve. What kind of “radio set” you workin’ on? I never seen it. Neither has anyone else. Who you talk to on that radio set? And who talks to you?’” (Serling) This is another example of why the theme for this teleplay is that mankind is its own worst enemy. In conclusion, the main theme of this teleplay is that mankind is its own worst enemy.
