A Long Way to Freedom

Storyboard-Text

  • Amara! I have a new lesson to teach you.
  • Shhh Majeed! Mama and papa will hear you.
  • We are so happy for you!!
  • Mahjeed was Amara's best friend. Since Amara wasn't allowed to learn Mahjeed would teach Amara everything that he learned that day. They had to do it in secret since girls weren't allowed to learn in Sudan. They could only do chores and work. But boys were allowed to go to school. Not going to school was very hard for Amara she enjoyed learning from Mahjeed and wished she was able to go to school. She had always wanted to be a writer. It wasn't fair to her.
  • Amara was on her way to do one of the many chores that she had. She had to walk 1 mile just to get one bucket of water. While she had time to herself she thought about the news going on at the village. Now that a lot of the lost boys made it to the United States now they would let some girls go too! Amara would love to see what it would be like with better food, cleaner water, and better living conditions. She was hoping she would get picked.
  • When Amara got back everyone gathered around her and rushed to her. She didn't know what was going on. Her mom told her that he was chosen to go to the United States! She couldn't believe it. She would miss her family a lot but she couldn't believe how lucky she was. She would be leaving in a couple of days.
  • Lets write a story.
  • Once Amara said goodbye to her family she met with many other lucky girls and got ready to go on a long car ride to reach the plain and go on a long plane ride to reach New York.
  • It had been 3 years since Amara was living in New York. She has a nice family that took her in to help her get money and get a new life. She was going to school to be a writer and really enjoyed it. But she had an idea that she had been thinking about for a while now. It was to go back to Sudan to teach little girls at school since now they are allowed to have schools. It would take a while to get to that but she wanted to do a good thing.
  • It took a year for Amara to get the money to go to Sudan. Now she is an ELA teacher. She enjoys helping kids learn and is happy that girls are finally allowed to go to school. She is so happy that she has the experience to go to the United States and will forever be thankful.
