- During World War II, Japan invaded Indonesia and ousted the Dutch. Some nationalists saw it as a chance for independence, but for many Indonesians, life under Japanese rule was harsh and exploitative.
- “They say they’ve come to free us from the Dutch, but we’re just replacing one master with another.”
- “This is a temporary setback. We’ll return and restore Dutch order.”
- “They took our rice. My husband was forced to work. Is this what liberation looks like?”

- On August 17, 1945, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed Indonesia’s independence. The Dutch, however, refused to accept the declaration, setting the stage for conflict.
