- Chapter 6 (Cassia)
- Chapter 9 (Ky)
- Chapter 10 (Cassia)
- This chapter is important because this is when Cassia and Indie board the plane to go out into the Outer Provinces. Once they get there, Cassia is able to start looking for Ky, which is the main plot of the book. It also kind of starts the action in the book, of Cassia and Ky both trying to find each other.
- Chapter 19 (Ky)
- This is an important chapter in the book because Ky is running into the Carving to escape and find Cassia. Now, Cassia is going into the Outer Provinces to try to find Ky there. Although, Ky is running into the Carving to try to get closer to the city to find Cassia.
- Chapter 22 (Cassia)
- This chapter is important because once Cassia lands a boy tells her that Ky isn't there. She finds out that he ran into the Carving to find her, and she decides that she is going to go into the Carving too. So, she takes the boy with all the information, and Indie and they all run to the Carving.
- Chapter 53 (Ky)
- I have reached the Rising! Time to meet up with Cassia again.
- This is an important chapter because this is when Vick dies. He wanted to go fishing but the Society started firing and Vick got hit. Eli and Ky then proceeded to bury him by the river.
- This chapter is important because this is when Cassia and Ky finally find each other. Cassia also gets to meet Eli, who she becomes close with, and Ky gets to meet Indie, who he becomes close with as well. Now, Cassia, Indie, Ky, and Eli are one big group, but some want to go find the Rising, and some want to find the farmers.
- This is an important chapter because this is when the reader finds out that both Cassia and Ky have reached the Rising. Ky decided to follow Cassia to the Rising because he doesn't want to lose her. Now that they are a part of the Rising, they are getting their work assignments.
