Comminution processes

- First of all, we are going to define all of this procedures as comminution processes. Even though, each of them doesn´t apply to any type of particle size desired
- In the case of shredder is brute force breaking of particles of refuse by swinging hammers in an enclosure, the type of material are easily shredded are rocks, wood and organic material giving a material with a partice size in a range of 30 to 400 mm
- Now you must know the cutter process which is commonly used with dried materials, different from the shredding process in which could be used organic material with certain humidity and this process it is used as a final one
- Now you must be confused as shredding and crushers are very similar processes, even though the most important factor to differentiate it is that crushing is used when the material is big for the shredding equipment, also it is used for fragile materials, but also this process is commonly used as a partial procedure and not the final one
- Finally, it is the milling process which is the most confusing one as it refers to a large amount of possible processes, milling could be used for most of the materials as it is the ball mill which could be used to achieve really small particle sizes from minerals, then are the hammer mills, attrition mills and jet mills, but all of them need to be used with dried particles, also by the friction there are some materials that could be in risk of changing its properties by the heat it is given in the process so those are the materials that can´t be comminuted by a mill
