act 1 scene 3 troy was talking to rose and cory comes in talking about how a recurtier is coming to see him and troy wont give him permission to play football because of the color barrier in sports.
Troy- " I don't care where he coming from. The white man ain't gonna let you get nowhere with that football no way. Yo go on and get your book-learning so you can work yourself up in that AP or learn how to fix cars or build houses or something get you a trade. That way you have something can't nobody take away from you."

act 2 scene 1 Troy's guilt builds about about his affair with Alberta and he decides to tell rose that he got Alberta pregnant and Rose does not take this well. He describes his marriage as suffocating and trapping claiming he stayed in "1st base" for 18 years to be responsible. And Rose views their 18 years as a devoted loving commitment where she surrendered her own dreams to stay and be with him.
