  • One of the main themes in The Monsters Are Due on Maple by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. When Les Goodman's car starts by itself, on page 75, everyone starts turning on him just because of that and some people say he and his family were always odd, like according to Charlie He was always an oddball... The group starts to believe that Les is an alien and when more evidence is told Les is forced to defend himself. This shows that people are ready to blame and find a scapegoat especially when they are scared of maybe getting accused themselves. Les Goodman's car also seemed to start randomly, but the group still acted like he did it. On page 81, Don mentions that Mrs. Brand has said Steve will spend hours working on his radio set at night. At this, Charlie also starts to suspect Steve, and they begin to argue with Steve saying, You're standing here set to crucify-all set to find a scapegoat-... Like with Les, at just one reason, people start turning on Steve and suspecting him of being an alien. What also supports the theme is that this isn't even a very good reason, yet fear makes the people believe it. Finally, near the end on page 84 everyone is so scared that they start blaming and attacking each other. This makes Maple Street go into chaos as people attack their neighbors. As Figure One says, They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find...and it's themselves. This proves that when people are unsure or suspicious they will blame others and only think about themselves. In conclusion, this proves that mankind's worst enemy is itself.
