- Hey man, do you have the amazon shopping app on your phone?
- Yeah I do, why?
- Gleiten: 2
- Well the other day I was talking to my mom about this game I really wanted for Christmas and now I keep getting ads for it all over my phone.
- Yeah, I’ve had that happen before too. It makes me feel like our phones are listening to our conversations.
- Gleiten: 3
- Its funny you say that because I just read a study that said “29% [of people] believe their mobile device “definitely” or “probably” listens to them via the microphone without their permission (Sheridan, 2025).”
- Wow really? That's a lot of people.
- Gleiten: 4
- Yeah, I guess people don’t feel they have any privacy online anymore.
- To be honest, they really don’t. Nothing online is ever really private.
- Gleiten: 5
- What do you mean?
- Well take instagram for example. You may have a private account and post a picture thinking it will stay private but there is a chance it won't. As soon as it is posted, people who follow you can repost, comment or even take screenshots. It is also usually very simple for people to hack into others accounts due to their poor passwords (Sheridan, 2025).
- Gleiten: 6
- I never thought about it like that. Can anything I do on my phone be tracked?
- Pretty much. There was a study done by Cambridge Analytica using data from peoples facebook pages to sort them into their personality types. They didn’t tell the users they were going to take their information either. They used their info to boost personalized ads for Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 (Democracy Now!, 2020).

- What? That’s crazy. How is that legal?
- They hide the consent for it in the super long terms and conditions page that nobody can ever understand due to the wording (Democracy Now!, 2020).
- Gleiten: 8
- Wow, that's really unethical. You would think such a big company would care more about trying to do what's right from wrong.
- I know, it's really unfair to the users. That’s why I spotted using facebook and make sure to read all the terms and conditions first.
- Gleiten: 9
- That's a good idea, I should really start doing the same. I’m going to go read through the terms and conditions on the apps on my phone and delete the ones that seem suspicious.
- Yeah good idea. Make sure to tell your friends and family too.
