  • The Monsters are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy
  • One major theme of the Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Sterling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. One example that supports this theme is when figure one says they pick their own worst enemy and its themselves on page 86. This shows that that the aliens acknowledged that they didn't have to do to much to get people to fight each other, and become their own worst enemy. Next Charlie killed Pete Van Horn and everyone tried to kill Charlie on pages 81-84. This shows that even after knowing and becoming friends with each other, all it took was suspicion to get Charlie to kill Pete Van Horn, and soon after led to Charlie almost dying from what we read in the story. Finally the aliens only turned power on and off in random places, however everyone tried to hurt and possibly kill each other, because they thought someone was the alien, when no one was the alien, on pages 85-86. This shows that the aliens did little, and these people knew each other and were even friends, however their suspicion led to them becoming their own enemy, and hurting each other.
