Zamperini, is violently beaten by, 'The Bird'. Zamperini's courage and strength in the face of adversity is despised by The Bird, and he is consequentially beaten as a result.

Zamperini, in the face of adversity, and possibly death, lifts the log above his shoulders.
Deep, heavy breathing
Zamperini, violently wounded, reflects on his life, recounting his most memorable moments. The Bird, mixed with shock and awe, sits on his knees accordingly, overwhelmed by Louie's unbroken spirit.

Cheering and celebration echoes the camp.

The following day, while bathing in the river, Zampernini and the other captives are successfilly saved, marking the end of the war.
