- I returned back with butterflies of dread fluttering within me. Covey had found where I was and started to punish me.

- In the moment when I was stuck in his arms, a sudden spring of courage seized in me, and I had the momentous decision to fight back. I caught him by the neck and fought.
- Since my fight with Covey, I haven't got whipped again. The rest of the year spent at Covey's plantation was more peaceful. If I hadn't have fought Covey, I would've have never realized how much courage I have gained. With it, I knew I could do anything
