Mai is a Vietnamese teenage girl who lives in Laguna Beach, CA. She and her friend Montana are planning to spend the summer at the beach, and relax. Her parents, on the other hand, have other ideas.
Mai has to leave with her dad and her grandma, Ba, to go to Vietnam. Ba thinks that Mai's grandpa, Ong may still be alive after he fought in the Vietnamese war.
In the village in Vietnam that Ong grew up in, Mai meets a girl her age named Ut, who has an obsession with frogs. At first, the two hate each other, but they become friends after they were the only ones who witnessed a girl show her butt.
I think I'm going to stay.
A detective comes and wants Ba to meet a guard in the Vietnam war who might know something about Ong. The guard says that Ong left a message in the cave that they were in together.
Mai's family and the detective come to where Ong left the message, and it says "Longing Missing You Counting Each Drop Of Rain." That was what closed every letter to Ba that Ong sent. They knew that Ong had passed
The family has a funeral with the people in Ong's village. When Mai talks to Ut, she decides she wants to stay in the village for two more weeks.
