- Okay Okay, let's just try to be as normal as possible today.
- Hey kiddo! It was good thanks!!
- Hey EJ! How was your day?
- Yeah, sure! I'll give it a try, why not? It's not gonna hurt anybody to show up
- So Jade, I have a really cool opportunity for you, and you can get a scholarship. Interested?
- Jade Butler goes to an all white private school, where she feels she needs to "tone down" her blackness in order to fit in. Jade doesn't have any friends at this school, and wishes she could go to a school on her side of town instead.
- WELCOME
- As Jade arrives at home, neither of her parents is there to greet her. The only person at her house when she gets there is her uncle (EJ). Her father passed away many years ago, and her mom works so many shifts that she is almost always never home.
- Hi! My name is Jade. Are you new here?
- Oh hi! My name is Sam, and yes I just moved here.
- At her school, Jade has a guidance counsellor who has been helping her get ahold of scholarships for her artwork, Mrs. Parker. Mrs. Parker introduces Jade to a brand new opportunity, where black teen girls are partnered with older black women to build stronger connections.
- I know I'm so sorry I feel terrible, but I got you some new art supplies to try and fix things.
- Where the heck were you Maxine?! You never showed up
- Jade decided to join the club, and she now has to attend the first meeting. When she arrives, everybody else seems to be able to find their mentor, but when Jades mentor Maxine never shows up, Jade decided to slip out early unseen.
- Why does everybody get a mentor instead of me? I'm gonna sneak out before anyone notices.
- Sam is new to the neighborhood, and quickly becomes friends with Jade. It is an instant connection, and now they do almost everything together. 
- Maxine and Jade decide to make plans and hangout, but when Jade arrives, she notices Maxine is not there. Jade then leaves, and about an hour later, Maxine shows up at Jades house with a bag full of art supplies.
