"Romans, fellow citizens, and friends, listen to me explain my reasons and be silent so you hear."
Brutus' Speech - Logos
"It is not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more."
When introducing himself before his speech to try and win the support of the Roman people, Brutus uses Ethos by saying that he speaks on his honor. He wins their support by stating his honor or his reputation and by reminding the people of Rome who he is. This sets up his message for great success.
Antony's Speech - Ethos
"Caesar was my friend, faithful and just to me."
In Brutus' introduction to his speech, he uses flattery to appeal to the emotions of the people. He uses pathos by calling the Romans his friends. This makes them more inclined to listen to him since he is sympathizing with them and is appealing to their feelings.
Antony's Speech - Pathos
"I've come to bury Caesar, not to praise him."
In Brutus' speech, Brutus uses Logos and applies logic to the situation. When stating why he killed Caesar he has to be very careful with what he says so that it is convincing and so the people believe him. He says that he loved Caesar as to not contradict himself and he says how he killed Caesar for the good of Rome because the people can relate to this.
Antony's Speech - Logos
"I presented him with a kingly crown three times, which he refused three times."
Antony is describing himself as Caesar's friend and Brutus as an honorable man. This makes the people want to relate to him more because he is bringing himself down to their level and he is sympathizing with them. His is establishing himself as the speaker to be trustworthy and just like the people.
Antony appeals to the people's emotions by telling them that he only wants to honor the death of his friend. He is making the people feel sorry for Caesar and his Death by reminding them of his brutal murder. This makes the people sad and want to listen to Antony more.
Antony reminds the people of how Caesar refused to be king to show them that he is not ambitious and truly had the well-being of the people in mind. This appeals to Logos or logic because it shows how Brutus was wrong and how logically Caesar was never a bad or ambitious person.
