  • A scene that exemplifies the motif of news and gossip is when Nick Carraway meets Gatsby. In this scene, they are surrounded by people, and Nick has been hearing rumors about Gatsby all night. For example, one rumor that Nick hears is that allegedly, "they thought killed a man once." Here, we can see that there is no definite answer as to whether Gatsby is a murderer or not. The subject of the phrase is the pronoun "they," adding a tone of ambiguity. To further this tone, Fitzgerald writes that the "they thought," which exemplifies that nobody truly knows whether Gatsby truly killed someone. Nick and Gatsby's first meeting is fairly anticlimactic compared to the unhinged rumors that Nick has been hearing. After Nick talks to Gatsby candidly about the host himself, Fitzgerald writes, "I'm Gatsby," he said suddenly. "What! [Nick] exclaimed. "Oh, I beg your pardon." "I thought you knew, old sport, I'm afraid I'm not a very good host."" Here, we can see that Gatsby clearly is not who Nick thinks he is, as Nick is caught off guard, exemplified by his exclamation of "What!" This moment also shows how Gatsby views himself, as he says, "I'm afraid I am not a very good host." Gatsby does not think that he lives up to all of the grandeur that people characterize him with. His beginning "I'm afraid," adds a mellow and kind quality to his personality, which is a stark contrast from the "killer" that he was rumoured to be.

  • Why does Fitzgerald characterize Gatsby differently from the rumours? Does Gatsby's anticlimactic entrance set the tone of Gatsby and Nick's relationship? I wonder how Gatsby's infamous reputation will influence how Nick acts toward Gatsby. I think that omitting who Gatsby is until they are getting along displays how Nick and Gatsby are a good fit, regardless of title or reputation.
