  • Identity Theft... What It Is and How to Prevent It From Happening to You
  • Identity theft happens when someone wrongfully acquires and uses someone else's personal identification, credit, or account information.
  • That sounds scary! Where do these thieves gather this information? How do I make sure it doesn't happen to me?
  • They can steal your identity by first stealing the information, whether it's in a purse, on a computer, or by attaching devices to card processors.  You can prevent it by not giving out your information and by storing it in a safe place that isn't easily accessible.
  • If I get my identity stolen, what should I do?
  • If you get your identity stolen, the best thing to do is act immediately. Start with closing all of your accounts and keeping detailed records on anything that happens. Then, make sure to report these happenings to all three major credit bureaus.
  • You got it! It's important to report to all three so that no matter what happens, they know it isn't really you.
  • I have heard of credit bureaus, the three major ones are Experian, Equifax, and Transunion, right?
  • Good question, that depends on a few things, like the method of payment and how fast you report it. For example, with credit cards, as long as you report it within 60 days, you are only responsible for 50.00 dollars.  With ATM and debit card transactions, it all depends on when you report it.
  • So, what if someone goes and spends all of my money and charges all of my credit cards, do I have to pay that back?
  • No problem.
  • Wow. Identify theft can be really dangerous. Thanks for your help on how to prevent it, hopefully I'll never use the other advice.
