The chickens are very populated around Sparks farm. They have been hunted by coyotes for decades.
4: Competition & Natural Selection
Genetic variation gives all the chickens notably different characteristics. The main one is their feather color, some are very dark, some are brown and others are bright yellow. Genetic variation is the genes creating different individuals in the same population.
5: Adaptation
Kicking off the spring season, many new baby chicks are born in various amounts of colors. However it's alarming how many new chicks are born. This is called overpopulation. Shelter, safety and especially food will become scarce.
Evolution Has Occured
The yellow chicks are easier for its predator, the coyote, to hunt. The chicks with the brown feathers can hide easier and the black chicks can't hide very well at all. It's natural selection where the best suited for the dirt and farm environment will survive and reproduce comfortably.
Brown Chickens were more likely to survive and create more offspring than any other. After various years of natural selection, this left most of the population of the new generation to be Brown Chickens. The offspring now carry the heritable trait of brown feathers ,making it easier to adapt and survive in their environment.
Evolution can happen quickly or slowly in an environment depending on the size of change and genetics in population. The genetic differences can include a short/long beak, light/dark feathers, short/long legs, big/small ears etc. In this environment specifically, the dominant genetic trait is brown feathers. The environment of the dirt/farm gives a sort of layout to whom can adapt , survive and create offspring.
