- Rainsford and Whitny are on a trip to go big game hunting. They are enjoying their night by standing on the balcony on the cruise ship. After it starts to get dark Whitny decides he is going to go to bed. This left Rainsford out on the deck all by himself.
- “But sometimes I think sailors have an extra sense that tells them when theywave are in danger.Sometimes I think evil is a tangible thing with wave lengths,just as a sound and light have.An evil place can,so to speek ,brodcast vibrations of evil Anyhow, I’am gladwe’re getting out of this zone. Well, I thinkI’llturn in now, Rainsford.
- “I’am not sleepy I’am going to go smoke another pipe up on the deck”
- When Rainsford was on the top deck enjoying his cigar he heard gunshots from the island that he and Whitny had talked about a few minutes earlier. After hearing this he fell off the deck because he was so startled. Rainsford Started swimming towards where he had heard the gunshots. He continued to swim towards the gunshots and eventually after swimming in the cold water Rainsford found an island
- HELP
- Rainsford made it to the island and awaiting him was a huge gothic-like mansion. He knocks on the door of this spooky and scary place hoping to get an answer.
- Where there are pistol shots, there are men. Where there are men, there is food, . But what kind of men, wondered, in so forbidding a place?
- God makes some men poets. Some He makes kings, some beggars.Me He made a hunter. My hand was made for the trigger, my father said. He was a very rich man with a quarter of a million acres in the Crimea, and he was an ardent sportsman. When I was only five years old he gave me a little gun, specially made in Moscow for me, to shoot sparrows with. When I shot some of his prize turkeys with it, he did not punish me; he complimented me on my marksmanship. I killed my first bear in the Caucasus when I was ten. My whole life has been one prolonged hunt. I went into the army--it was expected of noblemen's sons--and for a time commanded a division of Cossack cavalry, but my real interest was always the hunt. I have hunted every kind of game in every land. It would be impossible for me to tell you how many animals I have killed.
- After Rainsford knocks on the door a mysterious man named Zaroff opens the door. And invites Rainsford inside. He gives him the option to be hunted or help Zaroff hunt other humans for sport.
- Rainsford did not agree to the hunting of other humans so therefore he was the one being hunted. This is on the first night when Rainsford had to hide in a tree trunk as well as leaving no traces. But Zaroff still managed to fined him but did not kill him because he wanted the hunt to go on. Through the span of 3 days Ransford set traps that took out 2 dogs and Iven.
