- This shows character vs. self because the calf money was very important to Lyddie. Her giving it up is very shocking because she wants to save it to buy the farm back.
- This demonstrates character vs. nature because Lyddie has to go up against the bear which has wandered into her cabin. She has to stare the bear down until it leaves.
- This demonstrates character vs. character because Mistress Cutler is yelling at Lyddie. Mistress Cutler is firing Lyddie because Lyddie went to visit Charlie.
