The men probably didn't think that she was capable of flying during combat even though she was in the military.

She was actually the first woman to fly at night. She was also in the military, but was denied permission to fly in combat.
She was going to fly across the English Channel which was very dangerous at the time. Gustav Hamel offered to fly instead and she declined the offer. Her journey was then overshadowed due to the sinking of the Titanic.
What about Harriet Quimby?
Men believed that women were not capable of doing things that the could. Men did not want to see what women could do, they just assumed. Women had to fight very hard for their rights and gain respect.

Final Thought:Women had struggled to gain their rights and respect from men. They went through lots of trouble especially women aviators. Today you can see that women have gained their respect and their rights are equal to men.
