The prison reform lead by Dorothea Dix in 1841 lead society to make significant changes about the treatment of the mentally ill and how prisoners are treated.
I can't sit by and watch those people be treated like this.
I'll visit hundreds of jails and write a report of what I see.
What can you do?
One day in 1841 Dorothea Dix was on her way to teach Sunday school at a jail. This is what will lead to the Prison Reform.
Because we can't do anything to get out, we'll be stuck in here for years.
So many of you are just children living with adult criminals.
She became horrified when she walked in to see prisoners in cages and bounded by chains.
We can't believe this is happening. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
We all vote that we create hospitals for the mentally ill.
Dix became incredibly interested to know if this was what it was like for every prison. So, she set out to look for answer at other prison's.
She was shocked too see that other prisons were treating their prisoners the same. The thing that shocked her the most, was the way they treated the mentally ill.
From what she saw, she went to the Massachusetts State Legislature. This led to the creation of mental hospitals and the end of cruel and unusual punishments.
