Beowulf

  • BEOWULF
  • In the Land of the Danes, King Hrothgar led his people to prosperity.
  • With all his wealth, Hrothgar built Herot, a mead hall to share his wealth.
  • For years, Herot was where warriors went to share their success and let loose.
  • For years, Herot was where warriors went to share their success and let loose. 
  •  One day, the noise from Herot awoke the monster Grendel.
  • That same night, Grendel went to Hearot and attacked the sleeping warriors, devouring them.
  • Grendel’s actions continued on for 12 years, devouring the Danes. 
  •  This threat was soon to be answered by Beowulf and his men.
  • Once arriving to the land of the Danes, Beowulf was greeted by Hrothgar. 
  •  With the details of the situation, Beowulf decided to battle Grendel with no equipment.
  • One night, Grendel came only to then be attacked by Beowulf. 
  • As they fought, Beowulf tore off Grendel's arm 
  • Due to injuries caused Grendel to hastily retreat, later on dying in his swamp. 
  • 
  • Beowulf celebrated this victory at the peaceful Herot 
  • Beowulf hung Grendel’s arm as a trophy and received gifts from Hrothgar. 
  • After celebrating, all the warriors slumbered only to be attacked, this time by Grendel’s mother.
  • After counting the losses, Beowulf began to track Grendel’s mother, finally arriving to a cave.
  • There, Beowulf came across a sword which he used to slay Grendel’s mother, once again bringing peace. 
  • As Beowulf returns to Hrothgar again, he carries with Grendel’s head and the hilt of the sword used to slay the mother. 
  • Bearing even more gifts, Beowulf returns to Geatland with his men. 
  • 
  •  Having arrived, Beowulf presents all his riches to the king of Geatland, Hygelac.
  • Recounting all the battles, Beowulf is presented with even more riches from Hygelac 
  • Some time later, Hygelac and his kinsmen fall in battle, Beowulf is chosen as the new king.
  • As king of the Geats, Beowulf rules for fifty years
  • As time goes on, a dragon is awoken from his slumber by theft who stole from his treasure hoard.
  • The dragon followed the footprints of the theft, which led to Geatland.
  • Everyday the dragon killed the Geats and burned their land, returning to his barrow.
  • As Beowulf receives word of this, he knows he must suit up again for battle
  • Beowulf, fully equipped and with his men, gives a final speech warning his people that he may not return
  • Beowulf and his men set off on their journey, tracking the dragon to its lair
  • Beowulf and his follower, Wiglaf, fight and eventually kill the dragon.
  • Sadly, during the fight Beowulf received a mortal wound
  • Laying down, Beowulf asked Wiglaf to show him a piece of treasure gained from the dragon.
  • As Wiglaf shows Beowulf a treasure, Beowulf bestows his golden necklace to Wiglaf, then passing away.
  • Beowulf’s body is brought back to Geatland, he is sent off on a funeral pyre.
  • In Honor of Beowulf 
  • The Geats build a barrow where Beowulf was sent off to honor him and his legacy.
