- The mender of roads enters the wine shop, and Monsieur Defarge asks him to come up to Doctor Manette's old room so they have a private place to talk.
- The mender of roads, Jaques, accompany me to the apartment I was telling you about. I think you will find it nice.
- The mender of roads tells Monsieur Defarge and the three Jaques all about Gaspard, the man whose child was run over, who killed Monsieur the Marquis, how he was tortured, thrown in jail, and then hanged over the fountain for everyone to see.
- Gaspard, the man who killed Monsieur the Marquis, is dead.
- The Defarges bring the mender of roads and Jaques 3 to see the King and Queen, but when the mender of roads starts cheering for them, Monsieur Defarge gets angry with him because cheering for the king and queen makes them believe their citizens are happy, even though they aren't.
