To conclude my report, I propose a public mental asylum for the state of Massachusetts.
In 1842, a woman named Doretha Dix was hired to teach SUnday School at a local prison. Dix was horrifed by the conditions the prisoners lived in.

The prisoners were crammed into cells, children and metally ill chained up with murderers and prisoners being subjected to horrible punishment.

Doretha knew the mentally ill should get treated instead of being sent to prison. So, for two years she travled to other prisons and determined to change the conditions, went to the Massachusetts legislature.

A public asylum was created in Massachusetts after Dix talked with the legialture.
Doretha Dix continued to fight for better conditions until more public mental asylums were opened and debtors prison no longer existed.

By the time Dix died in 1887, debtors were no longer put into prison, there was a sepreate system for juvenile crimes, and many cruel punishments were no longer happening.
