- I am Ruth and I am assisting Ella to her appointment today, we are from an assisted living home and we have concerns regarding her getting enough nutrition.

- Why do you have this concern? Is she not eating or is having issues with swallowing?
- Well Ella has Down Syndrome and fights with the staff regarding eating and is losing weight, we would like to see if we can have a feeding tube placed.
- I like food!

- We do not place feeding tubes unless it is needed, Ella has no difficulty with swallowing. What does the family think about this?
- The family does not have much to do with Ella and because she is losing weight the state feels like this is the right decision.

- I cannot see the need to place a feeding tube, if your insistent, we will need to call in the ethics team to meet.
- The staff cannot get Ella to eat, why are you not willing to help us feed her? Please hold this meeting

- Mother of Ella: Why would you put a tube in my daughter?!
- Surgeon: These meeting is being held to discuss the need of a feeding tube.
- Ethics member: This patient does not have any concerns with swallowing.
- State: Your daughter is losing weight and will not eat for staff

- Ella's mother:I will come by the home and help feed her, she does not need this.
- Surgeon: This patient can swallow; I do not feel like a feeding tube is warranted for her.
- State: Ella will continue to lose weight, if we do not do something.
- Ethics member: I agree that something needs to be done to help her eat but putting her through surgery for a feeding tube is not what is best for her.
