I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm all too familiar with people judging you without having any understanding of how things really are. I enrolled in community college using FAFSA and Pell Grants after being released. I expected the counselor to be presumptuous and unhelpful like others had been towards me, but she was understanding, made me feel like I was more than just a felon, and called in personal favors with other departments to help me enroll, out of the genuine goodness of her heart.

You're so right about kindness being incredibly important. Her kindness gave me the confidence in my ability to succeed, and succeed I did. I graduated from U of M- Dearborn with high honors, which she helped me transfer to. When I called her to thank her, she took no credit and instead said that it was my own hard work that got me where I am. Noreen is a rare kind of genuinely kind person.

We both agree that while government welfare and social safety net programs are important, kindness and understanding from people can be just as impactful and meaningful to those of us who are trying to make the most of our circumstances. It's unfortunate that genuine kindness seems to be fleeting and often hard to find in people today.

Wow, she sounds like a truly good person to do all that for you. I wish I had experienced more support from people like that, instead of judgement and pity. People don't realize how much simple kindness and support matters to people who are struggling to change their circumstances.
