- Phase 1: The Early Fur Trade(1500-1603)Both the French and the British fished off the East coast of Canada. When they were there. they got to know the Mi'kmaq, and began to do some trading with them.
- We are from Britain! Wanna go to the East Coast and fish?
- Sure!
- Want to trade for this?
- Phase 2: Expansion Inland(1603-1670)New France was established and the French traded with the First Nations in the area around the Great Lakes and the St.Lawrence River.
- Sure! Lets see what I have.
- Can we trade something for that?!
- But we want that!
- TOO BAD!

- Phase3: Rival Networks(1670 - 1760)Britain set up the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Britain and France were both trading with the First Nations people. Now the two countries were competing in the Fur trade. Britain had the area around Hudson bay, and France controlled the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence region.
- Phase 4: The Drive West(1760-1821)The North West Company took over the French fur trade. Now two British companies were competing. They both moved West, trying to be the first ones to the to the new, unclaimed fur trade territory
- We are going to get to the new world faster than Britain! Haha!

- Phase 5: Monopoly in the West(1821-1870)Britain got the HBC and the NWC to merge into one company called North West Company, Which traded all across Canada.
