- Ivan Ilych was the second of three sons.
- At the age of 13 he attended the school of law.
- Everything was going well for Ivan until his wife became pregnant and demanded more.
- Ivan began to distance himself from his family by becoming a workaholic. He then realizes his salary will not be able to cover his family's expenses and moves to St. Petersburg in hopes to find a higher paying job.
- Ivan became very ill and realized that his illness is a question of life or death. The constant thought of his morality caused him to become very depressed.
- In his very last moments, Ivan Ilych realizes that his life and social relations were all "artificial" and this thought allowed him to die in peace.
