  • In this scene, Mattis and Thomas are practicing their high jumps at the Lindenwood field house. Mattis had jumped once and set the bar at 6’6 which Thomas jumped over easily. After that, Mattis moved the bar up by two inches and Thomas once again cleared it without a technique.
  • Central Idea 4
  • In this scene, Thomas was competing for the national championships with normal clothes. In order for him to qualify, he had to jump over a 6’8.25 bar which he successfully did. After that, he jumped over the bar twice. The second time he jumped, he cleared 7’0.25-foot-high bar and 7’3.25-foot-high bar on his seventh attempt. Before he could do one more, his coach told him to rest before he injured himself.
  • Central Idea 5
  • In this scene, the author is telling the readers that both Thomas and Stefan Holm had made it to the finals. The broadcasters had already picked a favorite jumper, Stefan Holm, because he was the reigning Olympic champion for high jumps. Lastly, they described Thomas “very much an unknown quantity” because of his sunglasses.
  • Central Idea 6
  • In this scene, Thomas and Holm were at the finals competing against each other for who could jump the highest. When Thomas went, he stutter-stepped his way to a couple of his jumps which made it harder for him to jump. However, Stefan Holm was jumping with ease when he went next to compete.
  • In this scene, the author is telling us that Thomas was gifted with a giant’s Achilles tendon which helps him jump higher than the average person. However, Stefan Holm was not gifted with that kind of Achilles tendon since his were more normal-sized, but he had more practice jumping high than Thomas did.
  • In this scene, the author is telling the readers that both athletes are both capable of doing the same sport with or without being gifted with genes or practice.
